Blog Tour- A Trail of Ink by Mel Starr // March 4-19

The newest blog tour features a book by author Mel Starr.

This is the Third Chronicle of Hugh de Singleton, surgeon.

About A Trail of Ink:
An excellent medieval whodunit by the author of The Unquiet Bones and A Corpse at St Andrew's Chapel

Some valuable books have been stolen from Master John Wyclif, the well known scholar and Bible translator. He calls upon his friend and former pupil, Hugh de Singleton, to investigate. Hugh's investigation leads him to Oxford where he again encounters Kate, the only woman who has tempted him to leave bachelor life behind, but Kate has another serious suitor. As Hugh's pursuit of Kate becomes more successful, mysterious accidents begin to occur. Are these accidents tied to the missing books, or to his pursuit of Kate?

One of the stolen books turns up alongside the drowned body of a poor Oxford scholar. Another accident? Hugh certainly doesn t think so, but it will take all of his surgeon s skills to prove.

So begins another delightful and intriguing tale from the life of Hugh de Singleton, surgeon in the medieval village of Bampton. Masterfully researched by medieval scholar Mel Starr, the setting of the novel can be visited and recognized in modern-day England. Enjoy more of Hugh s dry wit, romantic interests, evolving faith, and dogged determination as he pursues his third case as bailiff of Bampton.

About Mel Starr:
Mel Starr was born and grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. After graduating with a MA in history from Western Michigan University in 1970, he taught history in Michigan public schools for thirty-nine years, thirty-five of those in Portage, MI, where he retired in 2003 as chairman of the social studies department of Portage Northern High School. Mel and his wife, Susan, have two daughters and seven grandchildren.  www.melstarr.org

"An Unlikely Blessing" by Judy Baer Blog Tour

This book was a very good read. I have to say that I was not sure what to expect at first but after reading the first few chapters I could not put the book down. I read this faster than I have read any book in quite a while. I encourage you to pick it up! This book tells the story of Alex a 40 something who is seeking a different life that will make him forget about his failed romance and hum drum life in the city. Alex has no idea what will lie in store for him when he gets to the Hilltop Community. This is the first in a series that Judy Baer is sure to be excited to be writing. I want to tell you a little more about this book without giving too much away, but I confess I do want to tell you everything. Have you ever read a book that you want others to read just so you can talk to them about it? This is that kind of book.

Judy writes enough to keep you interested and before you know it the end of the book comes and you want to read more to see what happens not only to the main character but the other characters as well. From the wide variety of colorful characters woven into this book to the cute 3 legged dog named Tripod this book is sure to give those who have never been in a church and those who have been in ministry their whole lives a new look on what it is to become a part of a new church. I highly recommend this book to all of you and at any age. I can't wait to see what happens in the forthcoming books in this series! I give this book a definite 10 out of 10. Way to go Judy Baer for a wonderful and quaint book! You can find this book on Amazon.com by clicking here.

About the book: An Unlikely Blessing is a heartfelt story about a new pastor and life-long city dweller Alex Armstrong, who reluctantly accepts his first assignment, a two-point parish in the wilds of North Dakota. Hilltop Township, a farming community, blooms from the prairie like a wild pink rose—lovely and prickly all at once, much like the people who live there.
    Unlikely

Alex quickly finds that this lovely place is in quiet peril. Farmers are struggling to make ends meet: Jonas Owens, a faithful member of Hilltop parish, is on the brink of losing the farm. Alex believes that part of why God called him to Hilltop was to help turn things around, and steps in with ideas for saving the Owens' land. But can even God's minister help save this rural community?

There are a lot of firsts for the new pastor—the annual Hunter's Breakfast, julebukking (also called Christmas fooling), King Oscar's fish balls, and the melody of the musical saw. And the new, single pastor creates remarkable excitement among the unmarried women in the community. If you could die of hot dish overdose, Alex would be a dead man. Whether performing weddings, counseling his flock, or herding cattle by snowmobile, Alex soon discovers that his new church home has as much to teach him as he will teach them. Day by day, he falls more in love with the people of Hilltop Church. People may leave Hilltop, but Hilltop never leaves them.

    Guest Blogger Southern Fiber

Fellow blogger Southern Fiber guest blogs for me today on a new self-help and supplemental Bible study book. What a combination right? Please be sure to visit her @ Southern Fiber Reads thanks so much!

In The Life Ready Woman by Shaunti Feldhahn and Robert Lewis, the traits of two women are explored, defined, and illustrated - the 21st Century woman living in a do-it-all, breakneck world, and the Biblical woman.  At first thought, one would think that there are stark differences between the two, and in some ways, there are.  Most women that lived while the Bible was being written were stay at home moms and housewives.  They lived in a male dominated society, and for much of the Bible, they were even separated from the men by being limited to only a portion of the Temple!  In contrast, today's woman has much on her plate - marriage, church, friends, career, children, appointments, all while trying to squeeze in her relationship with Jesus Christ (note I did not include that with church - but that's another discussion).

With such stark differences, it's hard to really know what can go and what can't for today's woman, at least according to Scripture.  Feldhahn and Lewis show that it's possible to live and even thrive in today's complicated world and still be a Biblical Woman of God.  Throughout the book, they point out different truths from Scripture that women can have faith in and hold onto as they trust the balance of their life to God.  They point out some good qualities of today's woman in light of Scripture, and they also give warning signs for women to look out for so that clearly given boundaries are not crossed.  It is possible to have a career, for example, working outside the home, but for a Biblical Woman of God, it's possible to let this get too far.  God has clearly defined the priorities for women, and this can include in a career, as the book shows by using Scripture, but God has given clear boundaries for women in all aspects of life, and for good reason.  While this book reveals that women aren't secondary to men, it instead explains that women have roles just like men do.  I could go on, but I don't want to ruin the many Biblical truths that this book brings to light.

I did enjoy this book.  It was good for me to see that God has given me clear boundaries, and it was even more heartening to find out that I am not playing second fiddle to the men of the world.  I work outside the home, and that's okay.  I have friends, and I meet my husband head on in some decisions we make, and that's okay, too.  My husband and I share our parenting duties because we know that God has given this job to both of us.  I'm not the only one parenting.  All of these things are fine, yet God has clearly defined my roles in each of these areas.  It's hard to know where the boundaries are that God set unless you read what He said in the Bible.  This book is a great supplemental tool for Bible Study, as it is Biblically based and explains the meaning of the Scriptures that are chosen in order to reveal what it's like to be a Life Ready Woman.  I recommend this book to any woman in any stage of life - everyone can learn something from this book!

One note - I felt that this book focused more on women who work in the Corporate world.  As I am a Childcare provider, there were some areas in the book that didn't quite apply to me.  I work with all women, and we all take care of children - I don't see myself being one to climb the Corporate Ladder anytime soon.  That said, there were still several items of note that God revealed to me as I read this book, namely how to balance parenting and marriage.  I wanted to say this to show that no matter where you are in life, what you do, or what your family dynamics are, you can benefit from reading this book.  You will be blessed, refreshingly!

"The Rhythm of Secrets" Blog Tour Stops here today!

Patti Lacy brings us a wonderfully written novel that centers around the wonderful world of music. Patti artfully interweaves the themes of human love and the love of our Creator!! From the moment Patti introduces the faithful Pastor's wife and flashes to a young Sheba the book takes you on a whirlwind of emotion and a search for answers to questions that you are not sure you want the answers to. This book is definitely 10 out of 10 on my scale. Well done Patti.

I urge you to get a copy of this book the next time you surf the web or stop into your local bookstore because you will not be disappointed!

About the book: Since 1955, Sheila Franklin, a talented musician, has perfectly performed the role of devout pastor’s wife, locking away her past as Sheba Alexander and Sylvia Allen. Her carefully constructed façade crumbles with a single phone call from a young Marine named Samuel, the illegitimate son she secretly put up for adoption. Samuel begs Sheila to use her government contacts to get his fiancé, Mali, a Thai prostitute, into America. A dangerous mixture of love and guilt spurs her to help her only child even though it devastates her husband Edward and exposes her questionable past. After a quarrel with Edward, Sheila and Samuel board a C-130 for Thailand and then search Bangkok’s steamy streets for a Madonna-faced prostitute. The two whisk Mali from a brothel but are seized by a warlord who considers Mali his “number one girl.” In a teak “ghost house,” Sheila discovers God’s grace and gains the freedom she needs to find her own identity—Sheila, Sylvia, and Sheba. A framed story, this novel has roots in the bohemian 1940s New Orleans French Quarter and spans three decades, including the turbulent Vietnam era.

About Patti: Baylor graduate, taught community college humanities until God called her to span seas and secrets in her novels, An Irishwoman's Tale and What the Bayou Saw. She has two grown children and a dog named Laura. She and her husband can be seen jog-walking the streets of Normal, Illinois, an amazing place to live for a woman born in a car.
